Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that Israel “deeply regrets” a strike on Gaza’s Nasser Hospital and President Donald Trump, told of the attack in the Oval Office, said he was “not happy” about it.
Health officials said Israeli forces hit the Khan Younis facility twice in quick succession, killing at least 20 people and wounding many more, including journalists and medics, according to Reuters. Footage and witness accounts indicate the first blast hit an upper floor; minutes later, another missile struck as journalists and rescuers moved in. At least five journalists were among the dead, local health officials told the outlet.
“I’m not happy about it. I don’t want to see it. At the same time, we have to end that whole nightmare,” Trump said in response at a press conference in the Oval Office.
Netanyahu’s statement emphasized Israel’s war is with Hamas and reiterated the government’s stated goals of defeating the terror group and bringing hostages home.
The attack killed at least 20 people, according to Reuters, including freelancers and contractors working for their outlets and Al Jazeera; another Reuters journalist was wounded.
