New poll a big blow to Dem hopes of blaming Trump for the ‘Schumer shutdown’

A new poll spells disaster for Democrats desperate to blame the ongoing federal shutdown on their political opponents.

Leftist lawmakers have made it clear that they believe Republicans are responsible for the shutdown of the government, resulting in furloughs, terminations and missed paychecks. They claim that since the GOP has the majority in both chambers, they should be able to reach an agreement for funding. This completely leaves out Democrats’ obstructionist efforts as they continue to reject any deal that doesn’t include healthcare for illegal immigrants, according to critics.

But a new YouGov/The Economist poll shows which side of the fence Americans are landing on, and Democrats aren’t going to be pleased with the results.

While a majority of those polled believe that the GOP bears more blame for the shutdown than Democrats (39% vs. 33%), this 6-point margin is much smaller than it was just last week, when 41% blamed Republicans and only 30% pointed the finger at Democrats. As the ongoing shutdown continues, it can only be assumed that the margin will narrow further until eventually the majority believes that the left is responsible for keeping things closed.

Additionally, 20% of respondents believe that both sides are equally responsible for the current situation, which is down from the 23% who gave the same response in the previous week.

“Most Americans (64%) say that, given the choice of two options for how members of Congress should negotiate, ‘lawmakers should compromise to reach a budget agreement, even if it means sacrificing some priorities that they believe in,’ while 36% would prefer that lawmakers ‘fight for the priorities that they believe in, even if it means risking a government shutdown.’ Majorities of Democrats (60%) and Republicans (69%) would prefer that lawmakers compromise on the budget,” the poll results continue.

This comes as America prepares to enter week three of the shutdown, with neither side giving any indication that they will be backing down from their priorities.

“Democrats are insisting on addressing enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies, which are slated to expire at the end of the year, increasing insurance premiums for millions of Americans. Republicans, meanwhile, say they won’t negotiate on the health care subsidies until Democrats support their proposal to reopen the government,” The Hill reports.

While opinions are largely split along party lines, an extended shutdown may mobilize independent voters to join one side or the other and with margins closing, Democrats may start feeling the pressure from all sides.
