New Turning Point USA high school chapter in Portland becomes over-run with protesters

A protest erupted at a “woke,” “diverse” Portland high school after some students created a Turning Point USA “Club America” chapter there.

When the group held its first meeting at David Douglas High School on Oct. 8, dozens of students from the Black Student Union and Latino Student Union showed up to protest.

“The concern is that we might end up with a radicalized right group in our school, and with, you know, all the diversity that we have here, that’s a real threat to our students,” student Micah Coleman whined to station KATU.

It’s not clear if she was aware of the irony of her complaining about radicalism while being a member of a union that clearly endorses racial segregation.

Because of “the high number of students and the resulting disruption before adult supervisors arrived,” the remainder of the meeting was postponed, a school spokesperson told Oregon Live.

That’s when things started really getting heated.

“[B]efore a second meeting could take place, news of the disjointed start hit social media, with conservative activists urging an in-person show of support for the club’s teen founder,” Oregon Live notes.

A group of activists unaffiliated with the school, including adults wielding American flags, showed up en masse at the school for a rally, prompting a counter-protest.

One of the protesters allegedly told Jasmine Sprague, a mother who was there to pick up her freshman child, that the school was “oppressing white male students.”

“Sprague said she didn’t hear name-calling or profanities from the students who were counter-demonstrating, but she said there was some light ‘taunting,’ and questioning the flag-wavers’ presence and purpose,” according to Oregon Live.

“We can disagree about the politics of this,” counter-protester James Saint said. “This is a group of people that enjoy what they live, the freedom that they have to come and share what they believe in.”

Ollie Truhlar, a student journalist, also reported hearing sincere conversations between some students and protesters before those nice exchanges eventually turned into screaming matches.

“[An adult protester said] racism isn’t real, it’s only real because you believe it is,” Truhlar recalled. “That’s one of the things that made it go downhill. Most of the students there were people of color, but every single one of the protesters was white.”

“Go away! Go away,” one of the protesters yelled at a counter-protester.

“We were having great conversations,” the counter-protester replied as their fellow students began to chant, “They suck, they suck!”

Truhlar, a sophomore, was shocked by the whole spectacle.

“I feel like our school is a lot more politically opinionated than I had thought,” he said. “I didn’t know that there were enough people at my school who felt strongly enough about politics to argue about it.”

The school district’s policies reportedly say that students may “verbally express their personal opinions, but these opinions shall not be allowed to interfere with the rights of others to express themselves.”

“Students have the freedom to assemble peacefully, [but] conducting or participating in any assembly that interferes with the operation of the school or classroom is prohibited,” the policies continue.

The district issued a statement to KATU.

“Any demonstrations or expressions of speech must remain peaceful and within students’ First Amendment rights,” the school said. “We also want to reaffirm our commitment to supporting students’ rights to form clubs and express themselves in ways that are respectful and inclusive.”

The club’s next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 22.

Critics say the school district and city writ large should be focusing on other issues, like crime, not fake issues like high school kids “exploring conservative values.”
