California Governor Gavin Newsom said that the state’s Democrat-controlled government is moving forward with a special election on redistricting that will further disadvantage Republicans in what has become a one-party state.
On Friday, Newsom held a news conference where he was joined by fellow Democrats for his announcement that he has the support from legislators to get the measure onto the ballot for a November vote that will further consolidate the party’s power as well as help to offset the redrawing of gerrymandered Texas maps to help Dems retake the House in next year’s midterm elections.
The tough-talking governor has inserted himself front and center in the battle over redistricting in the Lone Star State, where more than four dozen Democrat lawmakers fled the state to sabotage a special legislative session, stalling redistricting as well as providing vital disaster aid assistance to Texans who were impacted by devastating floods last month.

“We have till Aug. 22. With the leadership behind me, they will get this on the ballot. We’re calling for a special election, that will be the first week of November,” the Sacramento slickster said.
“We are talking about emergency measures to respond to what’s happening in Texas, and we will nullify what happens in Texas,” he pledged.
The governor was flanked by state and national Democrat lawmakers, including self-proclaimed Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and two-time Trump impeachment loser, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), who heads up the state’s Democratic congressional delegation.
“So as we went through the details of the possibilities, I’m happy to report that every single member of the California delegation is willing to support a plan to do that,” said Lofgren of the redrawing of California maps that will allow the party to add an additional five seats for the midterms if voters approve the scheme.
“Now that Republicans know they are going to lose the House next year, they’re trying to change the rules to redraw Congressional district maps and rig the elections in their favor,” Pelosi said. “Democrats must respond to Republicans’ blatant partisan power grab. We cannot and will not unilaterally disarm.”
What separates us from these Republican states is that California trusts our voters. We don’t play political games.

“What separates us from these Republican states is that California trusts our voters. We don’t play political games,” Newsom said in a Friday post to X, cloaking the Democrats’ naked power grab in the guise of democracy. “That’s why we’re exploring a ballot measure to let voters temporarily adjust our congressional map if other states decide to manipulate theirs.”
The governor was also joined by some of the fugitive Texas Democrats who are out gallivanting around the country instead of doing the job that they were elected in the state that they are supposed to represent.
“We came here knowing the risks. Lawsuits, threats, and intimidation won’t stop us. We swore an oath — not to Trump, not to Abbott, and not to any party. We swore to defend the Constitution and the people we represent.” — TX Rep. Ann Johnson pic.twitter.com/UOnoFuQVcZ

“We came here knowing the risks. Lawsuits, threats, and intimidation won’t stop us. We swore an oath — not to Trump, not to Abbott, and not to any party. We swore to defend the Constitution and the people we represent. We’re not backing down,” Texas State Rep. Ann Johnson said.
“Donald Trump is tipping the scales of justice toward injustice for us all – he realizes his agenda is so unpopular that he’d rather rig the next election and prevent voters from holding him accountable and provide a check on his deeply unpopular policies,” Newsom said in a statement. “California stands ready to flex its muscle to ensure the integrity of our democracy nationwide.”
