NFL Prospect Kyren Lacy Dead By Apparent Suicide At Age 24 After Police-Involved Incident

Former Louisiana State University wide receiver Kyren Lacy died from an apparent “self-inflicted gunshot wound” following a police pursuit in Texas, Saturday.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the Constable’s Office responded to a weapons disturbance call from a female relative who said she got into a verbal argument with Lacy, which ended with him firing a gun into the ground. The release from the sheriff’s office said Lacy fled the scene in a vehicle before authorities arrived. The police later spotted his vehicle and “attempted to make a traffic stop.”

The release issued by the Sheriff’s office said ” a vehicle pursuit took place spanning several miles. Near the 25900 block of Aldine Westfield, the suspect vehicle crashed.”

They went on to say that “upon attempting to take Lacy into custody and remove him from the vehicle, discovered he had suffered what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

The release said “Lacy was pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS personnel.”

The Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Unites conducted a preliminary investigation that indicated “Lacy shot himself during the pursuit and prior to the vehicle crashing.”

They went on to say “a handgun was recovered from the interior of the vehicle.”

A review of body camera footage and police dashcam video “did not indicate any shots were fired after the pursuit ended,” according to the release.

Police interacted with Lacy prior to this incident, for a separate matter.

Police alleged that Lacy was responsible for a car accident that killed a 78-year-old man Dec. 17 and then “fleeing the scene without rendering aid or calling authorities,” according to CNN.

He turned himself in to authorities January 12 and was jailed and then released on $151,000 bail, the outlet reported.

Lacy was charged with negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run with death and reckless operation of a vehicle. The evidence in the case was to be presented to a grand jury in a hearing that was set to begin Monday.

Lacy declared for the NFL draft Dec. 19, two days after the fatal car crash.

He participated in March at LSU’s pro day and was ranked as high as the No. 6 receiver prospect in the draft by ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. in December.

Lacy played three seasons at LSU and had his best season in 2024 when he caught 58 passes for 866 yards and led his team with nine touchdowns, according to CNN.

The LSU issued a heartfelt statement following news of Lacy’s death. (RELATED: ‘Australia’s Next Top Model’ Contestant Lucy Markovic Dead At 27)
