Fresh from a stint as Meta’s Vice-President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg seems to have the chairmanship of Ofcom in his sights. The incumbent Lord Grade is set to step down early next year. Clegg shopped his expertise earlier this month at an event titled after is book, ‘How to save the Internet’ where he advocated for mandatory ID checks on app downloads. He’s also done a large scale media round discussing the Online Safety Act and how it should operate. Right in the Ofcom wheelhouse…
Clegg is not short of allies at Ofcom. One such is Ofcom non-executive director Lord Richard Allan, also of the Liberal Democrats and Clegg’s de-facto deputy at Meta. On Clegg’s exit from the Zuckerberg orbit, Allan said he can now concentrate on “the wide range of interests he’s got in the UK and Europe.” Hmm…
Clegg’s no stranger to the selection process. He led a lobbying effort to spike Paul Dacre’s bid to chair Ofcom which saw Lord Grade appointed. Time to return the favour…
