The word that the New Testament uses for revelation is apoka-lypsis. This Greek word gives us the alternative title for the last book of the Bible: The Apocalypse of John. It means ‘unveiling’, disclosing something to us that would otherwise be hidden. God reveals himself in everything that he has made and his invisible attributes become visible to us in the created order. Isaac Watts wrote a hymn about this titled, ‘I Sing the Almighty Power of God.’ Its last verse captures this truth:
There’s not a plant or
flow’r below
But makes Thy glories
known,
And clouds arise and
tempests blow
By order from Thy throne.
