Northeast Facing Potential Nor’easter Threat After Historic, Deadly Winter Storm

As the Northeast continues clearing away the heaviest snowfall seen in five years, cities including New York, Philadelphia, and Boston now face the possibility of yet another significant storm following closely behind.

Central Park in New York City tallied 11.4 inches of snowfall early Monday. Meanwhile, Boston recorded 16.7 inches with additional accumulation still possible.

Officials in New York City are currently investigating seven fatalities that may be linked to the severe weather.

In Pennsylvania’s Lehigh County, the coroner’s office reported three separate deaths, each occurring during snow cleanup efforts Sunday. (RELATED: Massive Winter Storm Leaves At Least 18 People Dead, 800,000 Without Power)

Attention has now shifted to dangerous cold throughout the Northeast, as a pronounced dip in the jet stream settles over the eastern United States, bringing in several days of Arctic-level temperatures driven by the polar vortex.

This persistent frigid air will cause existent snow and ice to refreeze, meaning the substantial totals from this past weekend’s winter storm are unlikely to melt through the week. Freezing conditions are expected to linger until at least the end of January.

Contrasting the broad, coast-to-coast system that dominated the weekend, the next potential threat is shaping up as a coastal storm.

A developing weather pattern across the Northern Hemisphere with the potential to set the stage for a possible nor’easter this weekend is being closely tracked, per the FOX Forecast Center.

A strong upper-level disturbance may become entrained within this deep jet stream trough, potentially generating a storm system off the coast of the Southeast or Mid-Atlantic, according to the forecast center.

Forecast models continue to show considerable uncertainty about the possible storm.

The FOX Forecast Center observed Monday that the traditional and AI-led European models suggest greater impacts along the coast of the Mid-Atlantic, while the American GFS model remains less aggressive in projecting significant effects. Should the ingredients align, the setup could produce another substantial snowfall event along the northeastern stretch of the Interstate 95 corridor — many parts of which have endured a snow drought that has lasted a decade.

In the lead-up to the weekend, the jet stream configuration will permit a frail clipper system to slide out of Canada, bringing the Great Lakes and western New York lake-effect snow.

The Daily Caller will continue to monitor the potential nor’easter.
