Out of North Carolina, a Northern Watersnake is going viral on social media after swallowing an impressively large catfish whole in a jaw-dropping video.
The footage was captured this past summer around Asheville when anglers suddenly noticed the bold snake crashing their spot to snag its own massive catch.
Emerging from the water with a catfish clamped firmly in its jaws, the Northern Watersnake paused briefly before swallowing the oversized fish headfirst. (RELATED: Detroit Mother Finds Alligator In Son’s Bedroom Just Days After His Death)
Fish are a normalcy in the Northern Watersnake’s diet, according to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
Per the Encyclopedia Britannica, snakes can devour prey far larger than themselves thanks to highly elastic ligaments that link their jaws, allowing them to swallow animals bigger than their own heads.
Northern Watersnakes aren’t venomous and are existent throughout North Carolina, according to the Commission.
