NYPD Makes Arrests After Anti-Israel Protest Spirals Out of Control, Israeli Minister Cancels Speech

Anti-Israel protesters clashed with police outside a Brooklyn synagogue Sunday morning, leading to the cancellation of a scheduled speech by Israeli Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and at least one arrest, as reported by The New York Post.

The confrontation occurred outside Congregation Shaare Zion on Ocean Parkway, where Ben-Gvir was expected to address attendees.

The protest, which began peacefully, turned violent shortly after 9:30 a.m. as New York Police Department officers engaged with demonstrators.

Video footage posted by Freedom News TV showed heated exchanges between protesters and counter-protesters, with police intervening to control the crowd.

Photographs from the scene captured officers detaining multiple individuals, including one protester wrestling with police on the ground.

A spokesperson for the NYPD confirmed officers were called to the synagogue at 9:43 a.m.

Authorities reported at least one arrest: Jennifer Hansen, 33, of Brooklyn, who was charged with resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, and three counts of disorderly conduct.

Police noted that Hansen had a prior arrest related to anti-Israel demonstrations in October 2023 in Midtown Manhattan, following a Hamas-led attack on Israel.

In that earlier incident, she faced charges including resisting arrest, obstruction, assault, and disorderly conduct.

The protest was organized by the Palestinian Assembly for Liberation of New York and New Jersey.

Following the disruption, Israeli media outlet Haaretz reported that Ben-Gvir’s speech was canceled and that the minister plans to return to Israel a day earlier than scheduled.

The clash in Brooklyn comes just days after another confrontation involving Ben-Gvir at the Chabad-Lubavitch world headquarters in Crown Heights.

That event also ended with multiple arrests after demonstrators and Hasidic community members scuffled. Last week, Ben-Gvir was targeted by protesters throwing water bottles near Yale University’s campus during a separate appearance.

Sunday’s demonstration reflects the growing tensions surrounding Israeli officials visiting the United States amid ongoing conflicts and protests related to the situation in Gaza and Israel’s broader security policies.

No additional arrests were immediately reported following Sunday’s event at Congregation Shaare Zion. The NYPD maintained a strong presence at the scene to prevent further escalation.

Ben-Gvir, a controversial figure within Israeli politics, has faced frequent protests during his international appearances, drawing criticism from activist groups opposing Israeli government policies.
