The shooter, identified as Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, began the attack around 6:30 p.m. inside 345 Park Avenue, a 44-story office building that houses tenants including Blackstone and the NFL headquarters.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch provided a detailed timeline of events during a press conference Monday night.
According to Tisch, Tamura entered the building carrying a Palmetto State Armory AR-15-style rifle after parking a black BMW with Nevada license plates between 51st and 52nd Streets.
Surveillance footage captured him walking across the building’s plaza armed with the rifle before entering the lobby.
Tamura’s first victim was Officer Didarul Islam, 36, who was working a paid security detail at the time of the shooting.

He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today.

Islam, a member of the NYPD’s 47th Precinct, had been with the department since December 2021.
He was shot in the back and later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Islam is survived by his wife, who is pregnant with their third child.
After killing Officer Islam, Tamura shot a woman who was hiding behind a pillar in the building’s lobby.
He then opened fire on a security guard crouched behind a desk near the elevators, killing him as well.
Another man in the lobby was shot and is in critical but stable condition, police said.
Commissioner Tisch noted that Tamura briefly encountered a woman exiting an elevator but allowed her to pass unharmed before taking the elevator to the 33rd floor, where the offices of Rudin Management are located.
Once on the 33rd floor, Tamura continued firing as he walked the hallway, striking and killing one man before turning the weapon on himself and shooting himself in the chest.
“His motives are still under investigation,” Tisch said.
“We are working to understand why he targeted this particular location.”
Footage posted to social media shows bystanders running from the building as gunfire erupted.

Tamura, who law enforcement officials said had a documented history of mental illness, is believed to have acted alone.
Investigators located his vehicle at the scene and recovered a rifle case, a loaded revolver, extra magazines, ammunition, a backpack, and prescription medication.
Tamura had a valid concealed firearms permit issued in Las Vegas with an expiration date of 2027.
According to law enforcement sources, Tamura had been employed as a security guard at a Las Vegas casino but failed to report to work Sunday morning.
Police believe he drove cross-country, entering New York City via New Jersey earlier in the day Monday.
The FBI responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.

Two individuals were arrested outside the building during the chaos, including one man who shouted, “Free Palestine, I’m not the shooter.”
Witnesses reported hearing a rapid succession of gunfire. “It sounded like a barrage of shots — like an automatic weapon,” one witness told the New York Post.
Another man who had been inside the building during the incident said, “I was at work and this guy came in with an assault rifle and started shooting.”
The NYPD’s investigation into the motive and planning behind the attack is ongoing.
