A New York Times (NYT) headline that mistakenly labeled NATO the “North American Treaty Organization” went viral online Friday.
The NYT ran an article on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization arguing that President Donald Trump criticizing the alliance and threatening to pull the U.S. out was undermining it. The error swiftly drew attention online and the outlet responded.
“A version of this article appears in print on April 3, 2026, Section A, Page 8 of the New York edition with the headline: A North American Treaty Organization Without America?” an editor’s note reads as of publication. (RELATED: Spain Closes Airspace To US Aircraft Attacking Iran)
“Does the @nytimes know what NATO stands for,” Politico managing editor Sasha Issenberg posted to X along with an image of the print edition of the April 3 paper. In a reply, NYT Communications acknowledged the error and promised that a correction will appear in the print edition for April 4.
A correction will appear in tomorrow’s print edition:
“A headline with an article on Friday about President Trump’s threats to leave NATO misstated the full name of the body. It is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, not the North American Treaty Organization.”— NYTimes Communications (@NYTimesPR) April 3, 2026
Commentators moved in. “An Atlantic sized goof,” one wrote.
“Fixed it,” posted another with an apparently edited version of the image reading “A North Atlantic Treaty Organization Without Atlantis?”
“How did an editor not catch that? Amateur hour,” a third wrote, while another posted, “We need a complete and total shutdown of J school until we can figure out what’s going on.”
George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School Professor Adam Mossoff alleged it wasn’t a simple act of carelessness. “The NY Times does know, and it simply doesn’t care. The @nytimes stopped being a *newspaper* reporting facts a long time ago,” he wrote.
Trump has recently signaled he is willing to consider removing the U.S. from NATO after members failed to support America in its war against Iran. He responded to a question about whether he would reconsider U.S. membership in the alliance in an interview with The Telegraph published April 1. “Oh yes, I would say [it’s] beyond reconsideration. I was never swayed by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and [Russian President Vladimir] Putin knows that too, by the way,” he said.
