As the president maintained his “hoax” position regarding the Jeffrey Epstein files, CNN’s Jake Tapper pushed back on what he considered “one of the most bizarre conspiracy theories.”

In the weeks since a joint memo released by the Justice Department and FBI contended the late convicted sex offender had no “‘incriminating’ client list,” President Donald Trump’s inclination to move beyond the story found leftists and corporate media fixating on the dead financier. So, as Trump once again batted down arguments that his name is featured in the files, Tapper considered it “madness” to suggest the previous administration may have been involved in tampering with documents.
After shifting from talking about prosecutors involved in Epstein’s case and a potential pardon for his associate Ghislaine Maxwell in exchange for information, the host of CNN’s “The Lead” — alongside his guest, former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara — said, “Yeah, there’s also this madness, this accusation, like, ‘Oh, three might be people who are Trump haters might’ve put stuff in the Epstein documents … to make it look bad for him.’”
“This is one of the most bizarre conspiracy theories I’ve ever heard. The idea that they would do this and then just walk away instead of-” Tapper continued as Bharara interjected, “Not act on it.”
“Yeah, like do it in 2016 or do it in 2020 when they’re trying to — or 2024 — when they’re trying to defeat Donald Trump. But then just put it there and hope somebody finds it,” added the host before concluding the interview.
In addition to calling for transparency and filing suit against the Wall Street Journal for alleging a crude birthday drawing of a naked woman with a message had once been given to Epstein by Trump, the president was asked once more about the late conductor of the “Lolita Express” during his trip to Scotland.
“Those files were fun by the worst scum on Earth,” said the chief executive. “They were run by [then-FBI Director James] Comey, they were run by [then-Attorney General Merrick] Garland, they were run by [then-President Joe] Biden and all of the people who actually ran the government, including the autopen.”
“Those files were run for four years by those people,” he went on. “If they had anything, I assume they would’ve released it. The whole thing is a hoax.”
Earlier in the interview, Bharara said, “Not across my desk,” when asked if he’d ever encountered any accusations against Epstein during his tenure as attorney for SDNY between 2009-2017.
The guest also criticized an alleged lack of transparency after Comey’s daughter, Maurene Comey, was fired from SDNY, reportedly without reason.
“By the way, the other thing we don’t have transparency about, relatedly, that I meant to mention earlier, is why on Earth Maurene Comey, who is one of the people in this whole long, drawn out saga who actually had something to do with affirmatively bringing Jeffrey Epstein to justice, why she was fired,” said the attorney. “So there’s a lot still to learn.”
Meanwhile, the same day Tapper was calling “conspiracy,” Vice President J.D. Vance slammed corporate media for years spent under previous administrations, “not giving a damn” about the details involving Epstein.
“If you want to criticize the people who aren’t showing full transparency, you ought to go after the administrations that went easy on Jeffrey Epstein, the administrations that concealed this case for 20 years, and the administration that failed to show full transparency,” said Vance.
