One Of The Worst Rules In Sports Is Finally Going Away

Finally! No more taking a friggin’ hour to finish the last two minutes of a game!

Multiple measures were approved Tuesday by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel that are meant to speed up the flow of men’s college basketball games, with the biggest change being the addition of coach’s challenges.

Whenever they want during a contest, coaches can challenge via the new rules any kind of goaltending and basketball interference, out-of-bounds calls, and if a non-primary defender was placed in the restricted-area arc. Adopting the challenge rules from the NBA, teams are required to have a timeout in order to get a review requested. If the team’s challenge is considered a success, they will get an extra replay challenge for the remainder of the contest. If it proves to be a failure, they will no longer have challenges.

In the last two minutes of a game, referees can still do video reviews on restricted arc plays and goaltending action, but out-of-bounds checks have to be sparked up using a coach’s challenge. Instant replay will continue to be used by zebras for scoring issues, timing problems and flagrant fouls.

Coach’s challenges — at any point in the game — are coming to college basketball.
