A 21-year-old woman, identified as the girlfriend of the deceased, was grazed by gunfire during the shooting and is recovering. No hospital staff were injured.

Officials said the couple had been involved in some kind of altercation with the suspect outside the hospital shortly before the shooting.

Police did not confirm whether the dispute was verbal, physical, or both. After the confrontation, the suspect reportedly followed the couple into the hospital and opened fire inside the ER.

Medical personnel immediately attempted to provide lifesaving aid, but the male victim was pronounced dead shortly afterward. Detectives and crime scene technicians are investigating the shooting as a homicide.

As of Thursday morning, no arrests had been made, and the suspect remained at large.

The female victim’s uncle told KIRO-TV that his niece was shaken by the incident and had witnessed her boyfriend push her out of harm’s way before being shot.

“I know that she’s pretty shaken up because her boyfriend, I guess, like, pushed her out of the way, so she just watched him get shot pretty bad, you know. I’m more worried about her mental and emotional state right now, more than anything.”

Following the shooting, MultiCare Allenmore Hospital went on restricted access, though operations had mostly resumed by Thursday.

In a statement, the hospital said, “The emergency department is open for walk-ins, but the waiting room remains closed due to a police investigation. Ambulances are still being diverted.”

As of Thursday morning, the Tacoma Police Department had not released additional details about the suspect, including a physical description, whether the suspect knew the victims, what led to the initial altercation, or the type of weapon used.

The investigation remains ongoing.
