Swathes of betting shops across Britain and Ireland are pulling down the shutters ahead of the Winter Budget. Reeves dropped a heavy hint about squeezing the gambling sector, declaring “they should pay their fair share of taxes and we will make sure that happens”…
Now, Flutter UKI has confirmed it will close one in ten Paddy Power shops – 57 outlets across the UK and Ireland – putting nearly 250 jobs at risk. A Flutter UKI spokesperson said:
“In light of increasing cost pressures and challenging market conditions we can confirm that we will be closing 28 shops across Ireland within the next month. We are continually reviewing our high street estate, but it remains a key part of our offer to customers, and we are seeking to innovate and invest where we can as we adapt to different customer trends and needs.”
In the UK (including Northern Ireland), 29 shops will close. While Paddy Power declined to specify which shops are for the chop, sources says closures will hit Liverpool and Sheffield among others. Meanwhile, William Hill’s parent company, Evoke, is also weighing the closure of between 120 and 200 shops ahead of Reeves’ expected gambling tax raid. The Chancellor making a bad bet here…
