Pardoned Henry Cuellar Answers Whether He’ll Seek Reelection As Democrat

Democratic Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar said Wednesday he intends to run for another term, and he’s doing it as a Democrat.

President Donald Trump issued pardons to Cuellar and his wife on Wednesday, saying their 2024 bribery indictment is a politically motivated “weaponization” effort by the Biden administration’s Department of Justice. Appearing on “Special Report with Bret Baier,” Fox News host Bret Baier pressed Cuellar directly about his political future and asked if he’s running for reelection as a Democrat.

“Look, I’m a conservative Democrat, and I work across the lines, and I want to see the president succeed. President Trump, and it’s good for the country, and I will work with anybody,” Cuellar said.

The Texas congressman said his support for the president does not change his party registration.

“We might have some differences, but if I can work with them, I will work with President Trump,” Cuellar said. “And as I told some of my Republican friends, I think I vote better than some of the Republicans in the caucus.”

Prosecutors said Cuellar and his wife accepted roughly $600,000 from Azerbaijani officials and a Mexican financial institution between 2014 and 2021 in return for using his congressional position to benefit Azerbaijan. Both have consistently rejected the allegations. Cuellar has stayed in the House seat he’s held since 2005. (RELATED: Cuellar Says Democrats Made Wrong Choice In Case Of Deported MS-13 Suspect)

“I thank God for standing with my family and I during this difficult time,” Cuellar wrote on X. “This decision clears the air and lets us move forward for South Texas. This pardon gives us a clean slate. The noise is gone. The work remains. And I intend to meet it head on.”

Cuellar, a self-described centrist Democrat from a heavily Hispanic district, has repeatedly challenged former President Joe Biden’s approach to the border and called out fellow Democrats for opposing the removal of an alleged MS-13 member earlier this year. He has backed several major Republican-led bills, including measures on migrant crime and protections for women’s sports. He also broke with Democratic leadership in November by supporting a bipartisan plan to reopen the government during the historic shutdown.
