Phillipson Praises Labour ‘Plan for Change’ By Re-Introducing Tory Childcare Policy
Bridget Phillipson is hailing the success of Labour’s ‘plan for change‘ this morning as it rolls out 30 hours of taxpayer-funded childcare for parents:
“Working parents can now apply for 30 hours of government-funded childcare. It’ll save parents up to £7,500 and help us get a record share of children school-ready, hitting key developmental targets. That’s our Plan for Change in action.”
That Plan for Change policy seemed familiar to Guido, who checked a policy launch by the Tories not long ago in July of 2023:
“From April 2024, eligible working parents of two-year-olds will get a new offer of 15 free hours per week of free childcare. From September 2024, eligible parents will get 15 free hours from nine months until their children start school, and from September 2025, they will get 30 free hours from nine months until the start of school.“
At the same time Bridget was railing against that same policy in public speeches: “I do believe that we need to move away from the system that we have right now – that broken hours model isn’t working… a bold and ambitious vision of how things can be better.” How’s that going then..
The other big Bridget policy – cash to open nurseries – is more than countered by nursery closures thanks to the NICs hike. ‘Change’ indeed…
