British journalist Piers Morgan asked Democrat New York City Mayor Eric Adams point-blank Thursday on his show why he doesn’t just “go the whole hog” and “become a Republican.”
In April, the Democrat mayor announced he would seek reelection and appeal “directly to all New Yorkers” by foregoing the Democratic mayoral primary and run as an independent. While discussing his reelection campaign on “Piers Morgan Uncensored,” the British journalist mentioned Adams’ support of President Donald Trump and asked why he doesn’t “just go with the flow.”
“If you’re so supportive of so much of what Trump is doing, why not go the whole hog and just run as a Republican?” Morgan asked. “It seems to me that running as an independent, you’re going to be carving up the vote with Andrew Cuomo, who wants to be mayor.”
“I could see your vote getting split. I think you’ve said this, that that’s a concern,” Morgan said. “But given that you’re so aligned to so much of what Trump is doing, why not just go with the flow? Become a Republican.”
In February 2024, Adams began calling out migrant laws implemented in the city as a result of its sanctuary city status. His criticism came in December 2023 after he and other Democrat mayors pleaded with the Biden-Harris administration to help with the illegal migrant crisis, as their cities had received thousands due to record-high encounters at the southern border. “It’s really interesting. I’ve watched many of your shows, and I really have never seen you do this before. Why are you trying to interpret what my position is? I’m not in alignment with anyone 100%. I’m in alignment with protected New Yorkers,” Adams snapped back.
“I don’t think there was anything I said on this interview that gave you the impression that I’m completely in alignment with anyone. I was aligned with what President Biden did that was correct. I’m aligned with whatever President Trump do[es] that’s correct,” Adams added.
Shortly after President Donald Trump’s election win in November 2024, Adams told Fox News that he was “looking forward” to “partnering” with the Trump administration on a list of issues.
“My job as a mayor of this city is to make sure I fight on behalf of mayors. If I was in complete alignment, we would not have been fighting to get our 80 million dollars back that was clawed back,” Adams said. “So I want to be very clear on my position. My position as the mayor of the city of New York is to fight for New Yorkers and continue to fight for New Yorkers.”
Notably, Trump’s Department of Justice directed the Southern District of New York in February to dismiss all charges against Adams after he was indicted in September 2024 on five federal charges connected to allegedly illegal contributions to his 2021 campaign. In a ruling issued in April, U.S. District Judge Dale E. Ho said he would dismiss Adams’ federal charges “without prejudice,” allowing the case to potentially be reviewed in the future.
