Pittsburgh FBI Field Office Targeted in Early Morning Attack, Suspect at Large

The FBI’s Pittsburgh field office was struck early Wednesday morning in what federal officials are calling an intentional “act of terror.” Authorities say the suspect rammed his vehicle into a security gate before fleeing on foot, as reported by Fox News.

According to FBI Special Agent in Charge Christopher Giordano, the incident occurred at approximately 2:40 a.m. when a white Toyota sedan crashed into the metal entrance gate of the FBI’s facility.

The driver, identified as 42-year-old Donald Henson of Penn Hills, Pennsylvania, then exited the vehicle, retrieved an American flag from inside, and threw it over the gate before leaving the scene.

No FBI employees were injured in the incident. Photos from the scene show the damaged gate with the vehicle’s driver-side door open and its hazard lights flashing near the security post.

“We look at this as an act of terror against the FBI,” Giordano said during a press conference. “This was a targeted attack on this building.” He added that Henson is considered dangerous and remains at large.

Authorities have not confirmed whether Henson is armed. Giordano explained that Henson, a former military service member, may have been experiencing mental health struggles.

He emphasized, however, that the case is being pursued as a federal offense. “Right now, he is wanted in connection with this crime against the FBI. It is a federal offense and we will be seeking prosecution to the fullest extent,” Giordano said.

Investigators also revealed that Henson had visited the Pittsburgh office just weeks earlier.

“In scouring our indexes, we did find that he visited the field office a couple of weeks ago to make a complaint that didn’t make a whole lot of sense,” Giordano explained.

“We ran down everything that he came down with. It didn’t have a federal nexus. We contacted him to let him know there wasn’t a federal offense that we were able to charge.”

Eyewitness accounts provided more detail on the aftermath. Nakeisha Brown, who works near the facility, told WTAE she first heard screeching tires before seeing the vehicle stopped at the gate.

“He got out and went around the passenger side and pulled something out of the passenger side,” Brown said. “I thought it was a gun, but it happened to be a flag and he just set it on that fence and started yelling out some words and just took off.”

Authorities are continuing to search for Henson. The FBI has urged anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact law enforcement immediately.
