Polls show Americans souring on President Trump as he nears 100-day mark in second term

President Trump’s second-term honeymoon has hit a rough patch, according to a series of polls showing voters have soured on the commander-in-chief and leader of the Republican Party as he nears the end of his first 100 days in office.

Mr. Trump’s aggressive push to crack down on illegal immigration, reshape global trade, downsize the federal government and test the boundaries of presidential powers has energized his Republican base.

However, it has also shaken Washington and Wall Street, raising concerns among Democrats and independent voters and triggering a series of legal challenges on multiple fronts that have become rallying points for his political rivals.

A CNN survey showed that 41% of Americans approve of Mr. Trump’s job performance and 59% disapprove, a 7-percentage-point decline in his overall approval since late February.

A CBS News/YouGov survey of U.S. adults found Mr. Trump’s approval rating has dipped to 45% from 53% in February.

A Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll painted a similar picture, with 39% of Americans saying they approve of the way he has handled his job, versus 55% who disapprove.

The survey findings also marked a drop from February, when 45% approved and 53% disapproved. It is also the lowest approval rating for any president at the 100-day mark, according to The Washington Post.

Trump administration officials downplayed the findings on Sunday during appearances on the television talk show circuit.

“This president has never, ever, governed by polls,” Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “There are 100 different polls that say 100 different things.”

“At the end of the day, President Trump is resolutely focused on ensuring that we are realigning the American economy to put Americans first,” she said.

Ms. Rollins also touted Mr. Trump’s record of accomplishment, saying there has been a 95% decrease in illegal border crossings and inflation has lowered.

“The prices and costs for the average American consumer are on their way down,” she said.

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, said the polls show the “more the American people know, the less they are going to like what Trump does.”

“The American people are furious,” Mr. Schumer said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “The promises Trump made are far different than how it has been effectuated, and that is why his 100 days have been a disaster.”

The Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll finds that the majority of adults disapprove of the way he has handled tariffs (64%), US relations with other countries (61%), the economy (61%) and immigration (53%).

More than six in ten adults say he has gone too far when it comes to expanding the power of the presidency. The majority of adults say his closing of federal agencies, firing of federal employees and targeting of his political opponents has gone too far.

The CNN survey also showed 65% disapproved of his handling of tariffs, 60% disapproved of his handling of foreign affairs, 59% disapproved of his handling of the economy and 54% disapproved of his handling of immigration.

A slim 51%-48% of adults approved of the way he handled gender identity and trans people.

The Washington Post survey also showed that voters trusted Mr. Trump more than Democrats, 37% to 30%, to handle the country’s biggest challenges.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent pushed back against the notion that voters are dissatisfied with Mr. Trump’s handling of the economy and tariffs.

“What I do know is Americans are behaving very differently than what the surveys say,” Mr. Bessent said on ABC News’ “This Week.” “So the surveys may say that, but consumers are still spending.”

“So, I prefer to look at what Americans are doing, rather than how they are answering polls,” he said.
