Several federal officers were injured in Portland, Oregon, on Saturday night after a violent riot erupted at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The attack followed a day of demonstrations that began with a large protest billed as a “No Kings” gathering earlier in the afternoon.
Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin confirmed that federal officers were targeted with fireworks, smoke grenades, and rocks as a group of rioters smashed glass and forced their way into the ICE facility.

The incident resulted in injuries to at least four officers.
Federal personnel were ultimately able to regain control of the building.

The violence unfolded after a protest that began at 1 p.m. in downtown Portland.
Tens of thousands of demonstrators marched through the city before returning to Waterfront Park around 4 p.m., roughly five miles from the ICE field office.
While the initial demonstration was labeled a “large-scale free speech gathering,” events escalated significantly later in the evening.
By 6:30 p.m., the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) had declared an unlawful assembly near the ICE facility.
Officials warned that crowd control measures, including physical force and impact munitions, would be used if necessary.
Shortly after 7 p.m., the PPB reported a medical emergency inside the ICE facility and said that medical personnel needed access.
Officers issued warnings to those gathered outside not to interfere with emergency response or law enforcement operations.
“Force may be used against you,” the PPB warned in a social media post.

At approximately 8 p.m., police said they observed ongoing criminal activity, including assault and property damage.
Authorities announced that targeted arrests would be made.
“Do not interfere with police action,” the bureau stated.
“Failure to adhere to this order may subject you to citation or arrest.”

As of Sunday morning, the number of arrests related to the incident had not been confirmed.
Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin strongly condemned the violence directed at federal law enforcement.
“Portland rioters are violently targeting federal law enforcement and we won’t sit idly by and watch these cowards,” McLaughlin said.
“Secretary [Kristi] Noem’s message to the rioters is clear: you will not stop us or slow us down. ICE and our federal law enforcement partners will continue to enforce the law. And if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

The attack occurred amid broader concerns about the safety of ICE personnel.
DHS reported that ICE agents in Portland had recently been doxxed.
Posters containing their personal information, including names, photographs, and home addresses, were placed around the city in an effort to intimidate and threaten officers.
In response, DHS reiterated its commitment to continue enforcement operations despite the threats. “We will NOT be deterred by rioters’ intimidation and threats,” DHS stated in a post on X.
“ICE immigration enforcement will only ramp up. The violent targeting of law enforcement in Portland, OR by lawless rioters is despicable, and its leaders must call for it to end.”
