Pro-Palestine protesters disrupted an Israeli orchestra performance Thursday with flares, allegedly leading to brawls with audience members.
The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra was performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 when demonstrators lit flares and shouted “Israel assassin” inside the venue, British outlet The Times reported. Concertgoers allegedly tackled the demonstrators with some throwing punches.
Footage appears to show one demonstrator to drop a flare and flee the scene after being tackled. The audience applauded those who confronted the demonstrators, the outlet reported.
Police arrested three females and one male at the concert. The Paris Philharmonic, the venue holding the vent, filed a criminal complaint after the incident.
“On three occasions, ticketholders attempted to disrupt the concert in various ways, twice using flares,” the organization said. “Other spectators intervened and clashes ensued. The troublemakers were removed and the concert, which has been interrupted, resumed and concluded peacefully.”
“Nothing can justify such actions. Regardless of individual opinions, it is completely unacceptable to threaten the safety of the public, staff and artists,” the Paris Philharmonic continued. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez condemned the demonstrations in a statement obtained by The Times. Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions head Yonathan Arfi called the incident “dangerous” and warned against allowing such protests to continue.
France Unbowed MEP Manon Aubry refused to condemn the incident, instead blaming Israeli actions in Gaza. “The best way to prevent this type of incident from being repeated is for the Israeli government to stop massacring an entire people,” she said.
French National Assembly member Marine Le Pen blamed “far-left antisemitic activists, encouraged by calls for violence by the communist CGT trade union,” arguing that “it could have turned into a tragedy.”
The Paris incident coincided with protests outside a Birmingham soccer match between Aston Villa and Maccabi Tel Aviv, where police arrested 11 people, The Times reported.
