Public Trust in Government Hits Record Low Under Starmer

Public trust in government has plunged to its lowest level since records began in 1983, according to the British Social Attitudes Survey by the National Centre for Social Research. Just 12% of Brits believe Labour puts the national interest first. A brutal 46% say they “almost never” do. Of more than 4,000 voters surveyed, only 19% think the way Britain is run couldn’t be improved – a staggering collapse compared to post-election bumps in the past. For context: after Blair’s 1997 New Labour landslide, 33% trusted the government to do the right thing most of the time, and just 12% thought they almost never did. A record 60% now back electoral reform to give smaller parties a fairer share of seats. Just 36% want to keep the current voting setup. For the first time, more than half the public – 53% – would prefer coalition governments. It hasn’t even been a full year of Labour in Downing Street yet…
