Quangos are treating the taxpayer like their personal airline loyalty program. Over the last three years, civil servants at 73 quangos have spent £20,172,723.78 on 45,792 flights. Not bad for a bunch of pen-pushers whose only remit is in the UK…
According to extensive analysis by the TaxPayers’ Alliance, in 2022/23 they spent £5,193,438.71 on 12,751 flights; in 2023/24, £6,990,388.21 on 15,612 flights; and in 2024/25, £7,474,753.02 on 16,712 flights. Not all quangos provided a yearly breakdown. Joanna Marchong, investigations campaign manager of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, told Guido:
“Taxpayers will be furious that quango staff are jetting around at their expense. While hard-pressed households tighten their belts, these bodies are splurging ever more on luxury flights to far-flung destinations. Ministers should crack down on wasteful travel and demand quangos cut costs, not treat the public purse like a bottomless pit.”
Those in the Met Office spent £7.5 million on 19,393 flights, including trips to Dubai, South Africa, Nepal, Cyprus, Indonesia, and Macedonia. Staff at the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency spent £1.6 million in three years, including business class to Cape Town, Singapore, Tokyo, Kigali, Ahmedabad, Chennai and North Carolina. Pen-pushers at Ofsted went to Abu Dhabi, Homes England to Boston, and the Valuation Office Agency even made it to Salt Lake City...
Meanwhile, the House of Commons indulged in business and first-class trips to Iberia, Montserrat, Los Angeles and Singapore, and the Crown Estate spent £65,504.52, with £34,115.08 on premium economy alone. Time for that bonfire…
