A German company has turned a $100 million museum heist in France into a marketing opportunity.
Böcker, the manufacturer of the furniture lift thieves allegedly used to rob the Louvre, posted a satirical Instagram ad Friday showing the equipment propped against the museum in Paris, France. This followed an earlier German version posted Monday.
“IF YOU’RE IN A HURRY. The Böcker Agilo carries your treasures up to 400 kg at 42 m/min – quiet as a whisper thanks to its 230 V electric motor,” the ad read.
Masked thieves allegedly broke into the famous museum Sunday morning and escaped with historic jewels worth over $100 million, according to CNN. Recently released video obtained by TODAY appears to show suspects escaping via a lift. (RELATED: Historic ‘First Woman’ Security Chief Oversaw Embarrassing Louvre Heist)
Alexander Böcker, the managing director of the company, told CNN he and his spouse were “shocked” when they realized “that our lift had been misused for this robbery.”
“Once the initial shock had subsided, black humour took over,” Böcker said. “We joked around a bit, had some fun and came up with some initial slogans.”
Böcker said the response to their post has been “overwhelming” and positive for the most part.
The heist exposed serious security gaps at the museum. Louvre director Laurence des Cars told a French Senate committee hearing Wednesday that the institution’s old surveillance system did not observe the Apollo Gallery’s eastern balcony, CNN reported. This area is where the alleged robbers got inside while using a an angle grinder.
She called the monitoring system “absolutely obsolete, even absent” and offered her resignation, which French Culture Minister Rachida Dati refused to accept.
The lift was seemingly stolen from its owner in the region of Greater Paris during a customer demonstration, Böcker said. “It appears that the company lettering has been removed and the number plates replaced,” he continued.
The stolen goods included the crown of Empress Eugenie, Dati told ABC News on Monday. Eugenie was the consort of Emperor Napoleon III, who was the president of France from 1850 to 1852 and then emperor until his fall in 1870 at the end of the Franco-Prussian War, according to Britannica.
The Daily Caller has reached out to the Paris Police Prefecture and Böcker for comment.
