This is rough … my thoughts and prayers are with Hunter Bigge.
Hunter Bigge, a relief pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays, was carted off the baseball field Thursday night in a terrifying scene that saw him blasted on the head with a foul ball while he was in the dugout.
Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash stated that Bigge was knocked on the side of his face, however, he maintained his consciousness. Per Cash via ESPN, Bigge is coherent and currently at the hospital undergoing tests.
During the seventh inning, Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman hit a foul ball right into the Tampa Bay dugout and popped Bigge, 27, right on the head. Bigge is placed on the 15-day injured list due to a lat strain. (RELATED: Pirates’ Dennis Santana Tries To Smack Fire Out Of Fan, And Holy Moly, This Could’ve Been Really Bad)
It didn’t take long before emergency medical personnel were on the scene to take care of Bigge. After a few minutes went by, with Tampa Bay players kneeling on the field, Bigge was put on a backboard and carted off the field.
As Bigge was removed, he issued a thumbs-up to the crowd at Steinbrenner Field who gave him a standing ovation. Following an eight-minute delay, the contest continued with the O’s taking home the 4-1 victory.
