The Tony Blair Institute has once again turned its fire on the government. This time, it’s cautioned the Chancellor against permanently whacking up taxes to a growth-killing high, and to reverse any hikes ahead of the next election if businesses are to have a hope of surviving. These interventions must sting given how many New Labour troops Starmer has called in…
The Institute writes:
“She should make clear it is temporary and conditional: a short-term measure to stabilise the public finances, not a permanent shift in direction. Once it delivers results, taxpayers must then be rewarded with targeted tax cuts before the election.”
It goes on to remind Reeves that businesses “[want] a clear signal” the Treasury still priorities them, and that Labour’s Employment Rights Bill is “too extreme”. Is anyone in Number 10 listening?
