Democratic Rep. Shri Thanedar of Michigan introduced seven articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump on the House floor Tuesday night, triggering a required House vote on the matter by Thursday.
The move has drawn swift criticism from within his own party and further complicated his standing as he heads into a contested primary race.
Thanedar formally noticed the impeachment articles as privileged, which under House rules forces leadership to bring them up for a vote within two legislative days.

Although the articles will receive consideration on the floor, both Republican and Democratic lawmakers are expected to support a motion to table the articles, effectively halting Thanedar’s effort.
Rep. Shri Thanedar, who abused beagles and abandoned them to die when his testing lab shut down, is going to force an impeachment vote on President Trump.
The Democrats should be so proud to be led by a guy who killed beagles, so fitting.
It’s DOA.

House Minority Whip Katherine Clark reportedly stated during a Democratic Caucus meeting that party leadership intends to table the measure on Wednesday.
NOTUS cited two individuals familiar with her comments, signaling that top Democrats are not in support of Thanedar’s resolution.
The backlash from Democrats has been sharp. Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York, who served as a manager during the first impeachment of President Trump in 2019, reportedly referred to Thanedar’s articles as “idiotic” and “horrible” during the closed-door meeting.
Rep. Susie Lee of Nevada told Punchbowl News that the move was “completely unhelpful” and called it “crazy.”
Rep. Veronica Escobar of Texas, who voted to impeach Trump twice during his first term, told reporters, “He should be impeached, but we don’t have the votes to do it.”
Other Democrats reportedly voiced their frustration under the condition of anonymity. One lawmaker told Axios, “This is the dumbest f**king thing. Utterly selfish behavior.”
Another member reportedly called Thanedar a “dumbass,” while a separate lawmaker described the effort as “irrelevant.”
Thanedar’s impeachment push comes as he faces a competitive primary for his seat in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District.
State Rep. Donavan McKinney, a progressive challenger, announced his campaign on the same day Thanedar introduced the articles. Former state Sen. Adam Hollier is also expected to challenge him.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib, who represents a neighboring district in Michigan, endorsed McKinney on Monday.
In her announcement, she wrote that the district “deserves better,” and expressed confidence that McKinney would provide stronger representation.
“I’m proud to have Donavan’s back because I know he’ll always have Michiganders’ backs — and because I know when it comes to real representation, Michigan’s 13th district deserves better,” Tlaib wrote in her statement.
Tlaib previously introduced an impeachment resolution against Trump in 2019.
Thanedar told Axios that he informed leadership of his intention to file the articles but did not seek their approval.
“Mr. Trump has conducted unconstitutional activities. He has conducted impeachable actions, and I have to do my constitutional duty,” Thanedar said.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York also weighed in on the broader topic of impeachment, telling reporters on April 30 that “we should never take impeachment off the table.”
“Where we see lawbreaking, we should never take accountability off the table,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
“Impeachment exists for a reason and it should absolutely be on the table. It should be on the table for every president.”
As of now, the House is expected to take action to table Thanedar’s impeachment articles ahead of the Thursday deadline.
