Report: Catholic Charities of Chicago uses pro-choice-aligned lobbying firm

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago uses a lobbying firm that supports pro-abortion political candidates and lobbies for abortion providers, according to a Chicago Sun-Times report this week.

Cozen O’Connor Public Strategies lobbies the Illinois state government on behalf of Catholic Charities of Chicago. According to the Sun-Times, the firm donated $3,500 in 2024 to Personal PAC, a self-described “pro-choice, no exceptions” political action committee that solely supports pro-choice candidates at the Illinois state and local levels. The firm donated $3,000 to that PAC in 2023. This year, an individual lobbyist from Cozen O’Connor also contributed $2,000 to the same group.

Additionally, Cozen O’Connor gave $1,500 to Preckwinkle for President, the campaign fund for Cook County Board of Commissioners president and vocal abortion supporter Toni Preckwinkle. Preckwinkle also chairs the Cook County Democratic Party.

Cozen O’Connor also lobbies the state government on behalf of Rush University Medical Center, which performs abortions, and represents CVS Health, a pharmacy group that dispenses abortion drugs.

Catholic Charities of Chicago is the official charitable arm of the Church in the third-largest city in the U.S., home to more than 2 million Catholics and Pope Leo XIV’s hometown. It operates with a budget of $180 million and has more than 1,200 employees, providing critical services that support immigrants, children, and families.

Neither Catholic Charities of Chicago nor the Archdiocese of Chicago responded to requests for comment from CNA.
