ROOKE: Irish Actress Used Oscars To Promote Something Completely Foreign To Hollywood Celebrities

The vast majority of the world ignores Hollywood’s award season. But every once in a while, there is a moment on stage that makes me wish I had seen it live.

Irish actress Jessie Buckley won the Best Actress Oscar at the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday for her role as Agnes in Hamnet. As Buckley clutched the golden statuette on stage in front of her peers, she showered her husband and daughter with love, dedicating the award to the “beautiful chaos of a mother’s heart.”

She spoke on UK Mother’s Day and thanked her 8-month-old daughter, Isla, saying she loved being her mom and looked forward to discovering life with her. She also thanked her husband, Freddie Sorensen, describing him as the “most incredible dad” and her best friend, and added that she wanted to have “20,000 more babies” with him. “Fred, I love you, man. You’re the most incredible dad, you’re my best friend and I want to have 20,000 more babies with you! And Isla, my little girl who is eight months, who has absolutely no idea what’s going on and is probably dreaming of milk, this is a big deal. I love you and I love being your mom and I can’t wait to discover life beside you. Chloé and Maggie, to get to know this incandescent woman and the journey to understand the capacity of a mother’s love is the greatest collision of my life. It’s Mother’s Day in the UK today, so I would like dedicate this to the beautiful chaos of a mother’s heart. We all come from a lineage of women who continue to create against all odds,” Buckley said.

Her dedication stands out because it presents motherhood as a positive and fulfilling part of her life. Buckley highlighted the role of mothers in her speech, linking it to her own experience and the character she played.

In contrast, multiple actresses have used public appearances to support abortion rights and credit the ability to choose abortion for their career success. At the 2020 Golden Globes, Michelle Williams infamously accepted her award, saying she “wouldn’t have been able to do this without employing a woman’s right to choose, to choose when to have my children and with whom.” She was pregnant at the time, and her comments unsurprisingly received applause from the radical left Hollywood audience. Busy Philipps has also credited an abortion at age 15 for enabling her career.

Hollywood’s awards stages have become pulpits for this message, where abortion is positioned as a liberator from the perceived chains of motherhood, which makes Buckley’s approach that much more radically different. She openly presented motherhood as a source of strength and joy that helped her elevate her career.

If you have ever loved a child, you understand the undeniable fact that your children are an undeserved earthly reward. We are blessed to have them despite our flaws. Her words humanized motherhood for millions of women caught in the battle between careers and family.

Equally striking was Buckley’s effusive love for her husband. Her warmth towards him contrasts sharply with Hollywood’s frequent portrayal of men and marriage through a lens of snark and criticism. Many actresses have used high-profile moments to decry the so-called patriarchy, often framing men as obstacles to women’s progress. Buckley’s portrayal of her husband as her “best friend” and an “incredible dad” is refreshingly sweet. He wasn’t the butt of her joke. She very clearly loves and respects him. It’s not every day a celebrity unashamedly prioritizes family without apology or disclaimer. Buckley’s Oscar acceptance speech avoided the typical cultural or political drivel expected of female winners. Instead, it was a unique human moment showcasing the everyday miracle of raising a child and loving the person who helps you do it.
