Imagine coming across a live WWII bomb in 2025 … crazy work.
The Royal Liverpool Golf Club is a storied course that has hosted The Open Championship 13 times, and they just added another chapter to its rich history. Because get this: They found a live World War II bomb on the property.
While performing routine drainage work, staff unearthed a suspected unexploded WWII-era artillery shell. Their vigilance in spotting the device averted potential disaster. We could easily be talking about a completely different situation right now. (RELATED: Michele Tafoya Considering Run For US Senate In Minnesota: REPORT)
Police and an army bomb disposal team responded to the call they received Dec. 12, triggering an evacuation of the club.
“We’ve been undertaking some drainage work on the golf course and come across what looks to be like an unexploded artillery shell,” said club secretary Simon Newland while speaking with the Liverpool Echo. “It’s very far down, about four or five foot under the playing surface, and one imagines it’s from the wartime.”
Several photographs of the artillery shell were shared by the club, accompanied by footage of the controlled detonation.
This week, an unexploded artillery shell was found on the course.
Following a successful controlled explosion carried out by specialists, the site was made safe.

Considering how the United Kingdom was leveled by bombs from Nazi Germany during World War II, with approximately 4,000 Liverpool-area residents being killed in the Blitz bombing campaign, this actually isn’t quite surprising.
But still, pretty insane stuff for staffers to just come across a bomb … it’s scary to think about what could’ve happened.
