Rubio tells Trump Cabinet he found ‘disinformation dossiers’ on US citizens, one is in the room

Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed on Wednesday that the Biden administration had kept dossiers on certain Americans, including an unidentified current Trump administration official.

Speaking during a Cabinet meeting with President Donald Trump, Rubio said that the Biden administration had specifically targeted Americans it believed to be “vectors of disinformation.”

“We had an office in the Department of State whose job it was to censor Americans,” he explained. “And, by the way, I’m not going to say who it is — I’ll leave it up to them — [but] there’s at least one person at this table today who had a dossier in that building of social media posts to identify them as purveyors of disinformation. We have these dossiers. We are going to be turning those over to these individuals.”

“Just think about that. The Department of State of the United States had set up an office to monitor the social media posts and commentary of American citizens, to identify them as vectors of disinformation. When we know that the best way to combat disinformation is freedom of speech and transparency. We’re not going to have an office that does that.”

Rubio appears to have referenced the now-shuttered Global Engagement Center (GEC), which was responsible for funding notorious censors like NewsGuard.

“Taxpayer grant money went to outfits such as NewsGuard, which purports to provide ‘reliability ratings’ for news outlets,” according to a previously reported-on Washington Times editorial.

“These self-anointed arbiters of truth consistently give right-of-center publications lower scores so other members of the censorship cabal can point to that grade and force advertisers to drop their support for ‘low-rated’ media outlets,” the editorial continued.

Likewise, journalist Matt Taibbi previously reported about how the GEC “funded a secret list of subcontractors and helped pioneer an insidious — and idiotic — new form of blacklisting” during the COVID pandemic.

He added that the GEC “flagged accounts as ‘Russian personas and proxies’ based on criteria like ‘Describing the Coronavirus as an engineered bioweapon,’ blaming ‘research conducted at the Wuhan institute,’ and ‘attributing the appearance of the virus to the CIA.’”

The GEC was conveniently launched by then-President Barack Obama’s administration in 2016, shortly before President Trump assumed office.

Thankfully, last year Congress didn’t approve new funding for the GEC via the National Defense Authorization Act, leading to it formally shuttering its office on Dec. 23rd, 2024.

However, reports emerged soon after that the GEC was just rebranded as the Counter-Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference Hub. Once Rubio discovered this, he took immediate action.

“I am announcing the closure of the State Department’s Counter Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (R/FIMI), formerly known as the Global Engagement Center (GEC),” he said in an April 16th statement.

“Under the previous administration, this office, which cost taxpayers more than $50 million per year, spent millions of dollars to actively silence and censor the voices of Americans they were supposed to be serving. This is antithetical to the very principles we should be upholding, and inconceivable it was taking place in America. That ends today,” he added.

Speaking later with conservative commentator Ben Shapiro, Rubio expounded further on this decision.

“It metastasized and metamorphosed into a government-run entity that was targeting political speech in America, labeling it disinformation and silencing it, all paid for by the American taxpayers directly and indirectly,” he correctly noted.
