A landlord in a leftist enclave ruffled feathers after his apartment listing required two very specific requirements regarding political alliances.
While policies in the once-Golden State of California have caused many centrist and right-leaning voters to flee for red pastures, one landlord in San Francisco appeared to be refusing to cede further ground to the left. In fact, according to a report from The San Francisco Standard, Alexander Baran’s listing for a two-bedroom apartment called for support of MAGA and Israel.
“The spacious two-bed apartment in Sunnyside had the makings of a steal,” wrote Tomoki Chien. “At $3,500 per month, the unit — with a private deck, sweeping city views, and in-unit laundry — was a reasonable deal in a market where prices are soaring and housing is in short supply.”
“There was just one catch regarding the open house,” he went on before quoting the Zillow listing, “Only MAGA Voters and Israel Supporters are Invited.”
The Standard’s report detailed that the listing for the 1,100 square foot apartment had been live from Aug. 5 through Aug. 17 when it was deactivated, “although it’s unclear if a tenant snatched up the unit. The Standard visited the property Monday and found no obvious signs of an imminent move-in.”
Chien went on to explain that when an effort to get a comment from 48-year-old Baran at his own unit in the building was made, he told the outlet from his door, “Get the f*ck away from here.”
“Don’t make me repeat myself,” added the landlord.
Reactions on Reddit found some suggesting they would have attempted to deceive the landlord by saying they were MAGA only to “move in and put up a Make America Gay Again flag,” while others suggested it would backfire on a lessee as “now the neighbors know anyone who ends up living there is a maga, have fun.”
“Leave it to MAGA to just go straight blatant housing discrimination,” another said, challenging the legality of the move as San Francisco tenant rights attorney Joseph Tobener told the outlet, “Political affiliation, unfortunately, is not a protected characteristic.”
“There also might be some First Amendment questions here — in terms of the landlord having protections,” he added.
Contending that the area’s rental market was the best in years, RentSFNow leasing director David Blosser found growth in the artificial intelligence industry as influential as he told the Standard, “June was really the pivotal moment where the market shifted.”
“Suddenly we were having back-to-back applicants for units across our portfolio, and really we hadn’t seen that since before the pandemic,” he went on.
Still, as some pushed back on the idea of conservatives seeking to foster housing opportunities for other conservatives in deep blue San Francisco, one social media comment argued that the reverse was the norm and left unaddressed by the Standard, “Normally it’s the opposite. But you won’t write about that.”
