Savannah Guthrie shared new details about her mother’s disappearance in an emotional interview that previewed Wednesday.
Speaking on an episode of “Today,” published Thursday, she opened up to her colleague Hoda Kotb and revealed new information about the crime scene, along with the moment she suspected something very sinister had happened to her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie.
Savannah sobbed and dabbed tears from her eyes at the realization that her status and wealth may have had something to do with her mother’s abduction.
“Do you think it’s because of me?” Savannah recalled asking her brother.
“I don’t know that it’s because she’s my mom, and somebody thought, ‘oh, that girl, that lady has money, we could make a quick buck.’ I mean that would make sense, but we don’t know,” she said.
“Which is too much to bear, to think that I brought this to her bedside, that it’s because of me,” she said.
“I just say, I’m so sorry mommy. I’m so sorry. … If it is me, I’m so sorry.”
Savannah recalled the frightening scene she witnessed when she arrived to her mother’s home. She said the back doors were propped open. She initially thought her mother may have suffered a medical issue, and medics had transported her out the back door in a stretcher. Frantic calls to local area hospitals ruled out that idea, and she slowly began to process what had happened.
“The doors were propped open, and there was blood on the front doorstep, and the Ring camera had been yanked off,” Savannah said.
She remembered thinking, “Something is very wrong here.”

Savannah addressed the alleged ransom letters sent to media outlets that demanded millions of dollars in bitcoin in exchange for her mother’s return.
She said the family and police did not receive proof of their legitimacy. She noted that she felt the ransom letters sent to her family directly were real.
“I wake up every night in the middle of the night, every night, and in the darkness, I imagine her terror,” Savannah said.
Tears rolled down in fear as she expressed that she lived in horror at the thought that the masked man seen on the surveillance footage allegedly took Nancy from her bed, who was wearing pajamas and no shoes.

“Someone needs to do the right thing. We are in agony. We are in agony,” Savannah said through her tears.
“It’s unbearable.”
Her emotional interview aired on day 54 of Nancy’s disappearance.
