CNN senior commentator Scott Jennings said Wednesday that the United States can declare success in its confrontation with Iran if President Donald Trump delivers on several key national security objectives.
Appearing on “The Lead with Jake Tapper,” Jennings pointed to comments from House Speaker Mike Johnson, saying the administration may have already accomplished much of what it set out to do in a short period. Jennings said the administration ultimately needs to demonstrate to Americans that Iran can no longer threaten the United States or its allies.
“I interviewed on my radio show yesterday, Speaker Johnson. I asked him a similar question, and he too said, ‘Look, I think the president’s accomplished most of what he wanted to do over a short period of time,’” Jennings told Jake Tapper. “I think you have to be able to say to the American people, ‘No nukes, no ballistic missile program, no aggressive navy, and no exporting of terrorism.’ If you can accomplish those objectives in the shortest time possible, irrespective of what happens to the regime in the future, that’s a win.”
Jennings said the United States should only declare victory in its conflict with Iran once officials can assure the American people that the regime’s nuclear threat is eliminated.

“But they shouldn’t do that until we can assure the American people, particularly on the nuclear piece, because these fanatics, they want to bring about the end of the world with the nuclear weapons,” Jennings added. “But if you can assure the American people you’ve accomplished those four objectives, that’s a win. And I think the American people want that done in the shortest time possible. If that all were to happen, this will be a roaring success.”
Iran’s nuclear program has remained a central issue in U.S. national security policy for years. The Iranian regime has continued enriching uranium at levels far beyond what is required for civilian energy production, raising concerns about its potential to produce nuclear weapons. Trump has long argued that Tehran cannot be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon and withdrew the United States from the 2015 nuclear deal during his first term. The agreement included sunset provisions that would have eventually lifted restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program.
