Early Sunday morning in Wichita, Kansas, surveillance video from the entry to a residence captured the harrowing moments a woman was seemingly forcibly led away by a man appearing to restrain her. By Tuesday evening, law enforcement had confirmed the arrest of a man in relation to the suspected domestic violence incident, as public interest in the case was believed to have inspired the victim to identify herself to authorities.

The latest update from the Wichita Police Department came late Tuesday when it was announced that officers with the Domestic Intervention and Violence Reduction team had arrested the 22-year-old male allegedly seen in the doorbell video. He was booked into Sedgwick County Jail on charges of “Aggravated Battery Strangulation, Two counts of Domestic Simple Battery, and Criminal Restraint.”

The arrest came hours after a 35-year-old female had reached out to investigators to identify herself as the victim in the video. “Investigators immediately responded to her location, made contact, and transported her to City Hall so detectives could conduct a victim interview.”

“At this stage of the investigation, we believe this incident is a case of domestic violence where the female was victimized by her boyfriend. The female does not have any significant injuries,” the update said as the police added thanks to the public “for sharing the video and still images that generated additional attention about this incident, we do believe it led the female to call us, saying she was the person we were looking for.”

“As we stressed this morning, we do not have any reason to believe there is ongoing danger to the general public,” the police stated. “We are grateful for the community’s help and the attention this case received. Our priority remains transparency and ensuring the safety of everyone involved.”

Prior to identifying the woman, Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses remarked during a press conference, “We have to treat everything as though it’s real until we can verify otherwise. At this point, we cannot verify if this is a hoax or anything else, so we are operating under the assumption that this is a legitimate incident.”

He also addressed videos altered by artificial intelligence that purported to provide clear images of the faces in the clip, as he said, “The use of artificial intelligence for this type of an investigation does have the ability to complicate our investigation because it can generate erroneous tips and information that’s not verified by a human being.”

For that reason, though he welcomed all tips to aid in the investigation, Moses stressed the importance of only sharing details verified by the authorities.
