Sen. Ossoff talks Trump impeachment – over meme coin marketing efforts

Leftists latched onto a new cause to call for President Donald Trump’s impeachment after alleging a “pay-to-play” scandal involving cryptocurrency.

The continued quest for a cause du jour that supporters might rally behind found Democratic politicians hurling a new charge at the White House that they believed was worthy of impeachment. Specifically, when confronted by an attendee at a Friday town hall, Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff (D) argued the president’s promotion regarding a meme coin dinner was worthy of attempting an ouster.

“So, where is everybody who was so furious about Hunter Biden’s paintings…”

When a woman at the senator’s town hall was done wailing about “what we need,” Ossoff began his response by pointing to the website for $Trump token that read, “Have Dinner in Washington, D.C. With President Trump.”

“There is no doubt that this president’s conduct has already exceeded any prior standard for impeachment by the United States House of Representatives. I saw just 48 hours ago, he is granting audience to people who buy his meme coin,” said Ossoff. “So it is in our corrupt political system, it is a standard practice, tragically, for elected officials to grant audiences and time to people in exchange for campaign contributions. He is granting audience to people who purchase the meme coin that directly enriches him. So, where is everybody who was so furious about Hunter Biden’s paintings, which by the way, I do not defend.”

“There is no question that this rises to the level of an impeachable offense,” added the lawmaker, who noted it was a futile gesture without control of Congress.

The promotion linked to a planned May 22 dinner at Trump’s Washington, D.C.-area golf club was expected to permit 220 investors with a “VIP White House Tour” the next day for the top 25 holders.

According to NBC News, the announced dinner had spiked interest in the coin by over 50%, equating to roughly $1 million in trading fees in two days, bringing the cryptocurrency’s value to around $2.7 billion. As such, politicians who’d turned a blind eye to both then-President Joe Biden’s failing cognitive ability and his alleged influence peddling were poised to pounce at an opportunity to promote kicking Trump out of the White House.

“This isn’t Trump just being Trump. The Trump coin scam is the most brazenly corrupt thing a President has ever done. Not close,” argued Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy (D) on X as Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) urged the U.S. Office of Government Ethics to open an investigation into “pay to play” corruption.

“President Trump’s announcement promises exclusive access to the presidency in exchange for significant investment in one of the President’s business ventures,” a letter from the senators obtained by CNBC read in part. “This latest action raises grave ethics and legal concerns, including the severe risk that President Trump and other officials may be engaging in ‘pay to play’ corruption by selling presidential access to individuals or entities, to include foreign nationals and corporate actors with vested interests in federal action, while personally enriching the President and his family.”

Meanwhile, Campaign Legal Center director of ethics Delaney Marsco argued to NBC News, “Criminal conflicts of interest statutes don’t apply to the president.”

“That has allowed him to go against decades of norms that every modern president since [President Jimmy] Carter has adhered to, which is to divest your financial interests, rid yourself of your businesses, and kind of go in to the presidency with a clean financial slate so that no one could accuse you of manipulating policy decisions or using your position in order to enrich yourself,” he went on. “The fact that he is not barred by law from having these financial interests like this meme coin allows him to engage in a lot of seemingly corrupt activity. It has the appearance of a pay-to-play, so the president is apparently selling access to himself.”
