House Speaker Mike Johnson slammed Democrats on Fox Business Friday for refusing to back a resolution honoring the life and legacy of Charlie Kirk.
The House approved a resolution honoring Kirk in a 310-58 vote Friday. Exactly 58 Democrats — including Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett — opposed the measure. During an interview on “Kudlow,” Johnson said the resolution condemned political violence, praised Kirk’s commitment to free speech and patriotism, and called on Americans to seek unity in the wake of his assassination.
“118 Democrats this afternoon, Larry, decided not to vote or to vote no on this resolution. All it does is affirm a young American who died too early, who gave his life to American principles and values and patriotism and free speech,” Johnson told host Larry Kudlow. “And it decried the assassination and political violence that’s taken over our country. Democrats voted against that, and I think it’s shameful.”
Johnson said lawmakers across the aisle initially wanted to formally honor Kirk’s legacy, but Democrats backed away.

“Everyone in Congress wanted to take some action. They wanted to go on record to affirm the incredible legacy and the life of our friend Charlie Kirk. Now the Democrats didn’t see it the same way, and in spite of that lofty language that you just read there, that’s a sampling of the language in the resolution. There’s nothing partisan about it at all,” Johnson added.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and his leadership team supported the resolution, while 38 Democrats voted “present.” Exactly 22 others declined to vote. (RELATED: Mike Johnson Breaks Down Why ABC Did Not Violate Free Speech)
A gunman shot and killed Kirk on Sept. 10 during a speaking event at Utah Valley University. Authorities charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinson with aggravated murder, a capital offense. Investigators linked him to far-left ideology.
Democratic leadership expressed support for the resolution during a closed-door meeting but, according to Axios, offered no formal guidance to members on how to vote. The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) slammed Democrats for refusing to back the measure.
“The modern Democrat Party is simply too radical and unhinged to condemn a politically motivated assassination and honor a man and father of two whose only crime was loving America, winning the debate in the proper fashion, and inspiring others to do the same,” NRCC spokesman Mike Marinella said in a statement.
