Shane Tamura kills 4 in Manhattan office shooting before taking own life, police say

A rifle-toting man killed a police officer and three other people during a Monday evening shooting inside a Manhattan office building, police said, before the assailant turned the gun on himself.

The gunman shot and killed his victims inside 345 Park Ave. in Midtown, a skyscraper that houses KPMG, Blackstone and the NFL’s headquarters, authorities said.

New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch identified the slain officer as Didarul Islam, 36, a fourth-year veteran of the force who normally works in the Bronx. The Bangladeshi immigrant leaves behind two young boys and a pregnant wife.

“He was doing what he does best, and all members of the police department carry out, he was saving lives. He’s protecting New Yorkers,” Mayor Eric Adams said at a late-night press conference.

Officer Islam was off-duty but working as part of a paid detail program that allows private companies to hire NYPD officers in uniform to work security.

Bsides the three slain civilians, two women and a man, another man was shot and is in critical but stable condition, Commissioner Tisch said. Several other people suffered minor injuries while attempting to escape, she added.

Authorities did not identify the other victims killed or wounded in the carnage that started around 6:30 p.m., pending notification of next of kin.

Law enforcement officials said the suspect was Shane Tamura, 27, of Nevada. The suspect was found dead on the 33rd floor of the building with his ID and a concealed-carry permit from Nevada.

Commissioner Tisch said the shooter entered the high-rise lobby and immediately opened fire on Officer Islam. He then sprayed gunfire throughout the main floor, mortally wounding a man and a woman, before taking an elevator up to the 33rd floor and killing another woman.

The commissioner said he took his own life in a hallway soon afterward by shooting himself in the chest.

According to Commissioner Tisch, Tamura drove across country in his own car, a black BMW that he double-parked outside the building.

Las Vegas police informed NYPD that the Tamura had a history of mental health issues and medication was found in the car, but New York officials did not specify the conditions or medications.

Surveillance footage circulating around social media appears to capture the suspect walking into the building with sunglasses on and a tan rifle casually hanging from his right hand.

“Our hearts are heavy,” Mr.Adams said at the Monday night news conference. “Four souls lost to a senseless act of gun violence.”

Authorities identified the weapon Monday evening as an M-4 and said a handgun and ammunition also were found in his car.

Prior to the assailant’s death, Mr. Adams urged people to stay inside the skyscraper so authorities surrounding the building could do a floor-by-floor search for the gunman.

Local news coverage showed lines of people evacuating the office building with their hands above their heads. The shooting erupted near Grand Central Terminal and about a block away from St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Some finance workers at an office building down the block were picking up dinner at a corner eatery when they heard a loud noise and saw people running.

“It was like a crowd panic,” Anna Smith, who joined the workers pouring back into the finance office building, told the Associated Press.

They remained there for about two hours before being told they could leave.
