Shein Appears To Use Luigi Mangioni’s Face To Advertise Summer Shirt

Fashion giant Shein appears to have used an image with Luigi Mangione’s likeness as part of their advertising campaign.

Shein launched an investigation after a photo seemingly bearing the likeness of Luigi Mangione was used on their website to model a white, short-sleeved shirt, a company spokesperson told BBC News. The shirt retailed for a little over $11 online, according to an archive of their website. Mangione is currently behind bars on allegations of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York.

“The image in question was provided by a third-party vendor and was removed immediately upon discovery,” the spokesperson from the Shein told BBC News.

The spokesperson continued, “We have stringent standards for all listings on our platform.”

Shein released very few details surrounding the image in question. “We are conducting a thorough investigation, strengthening our monitoring processes, and will take appropriate action against the vendor in line with our policies,” the Singapore-based firm said.

It’s unclear when the image first appeared on the website or who provided the image to the Chinese-origin fashion company, according to BBC News. There have reportedly been questions surrounding whether the image was created using artificial intelligence but it remains unknown.

The facial recognition system Amazon Rekognition discovered a 99.9% similarity score between the posted image and an authentic photo of the accused murderer from court, according to BBC Verify.

Mangione gained worldwide attention after officials accused him of Thompson’s murder. The case ignited a social media frenzy fueled by anger toward America’s private health insurers. (RELATED: Actress Jameela Jamil Glorifies Alleged Assassin Luigi Mangione)

Federal authorities charged the 26-year-old with murder and stalking. Mangione pleaded not guilty to all federal charges in April. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that the Department of Justice seeks the death penalty if he is convicted.
