The fatal shooting of Loyola University Chicago student Sheridan Gorman has drawn national attention, with commentators Kevin Corke and Mehek Cooke discussing the case and its broader implications for public safety and city leadership.

Gorman, an 18-year-old student originally from New York, was shot and killed in Chicago, prompting reactions focused on the impact of the crime on her family and the surrounding community.

Kevin Corke addressed the tragedy by describing the expectations families have when sending their children to college and the loss experienced in this case.

“I feel so awful for the families over there in Chicago. You just you know that you send a child off to school, you hope and expect that they will grow into great, productive adults, and to have her life taken away in such a devastating way is just unimaginable.”

Mehek Cooke responded by emphasizing the personal impact of the incident and raising concerns about public safety in Chicago.

“Kevin, you’re right. Look, I’m a mother. It this is unfathomable to think that you’re sending your child to college. Sheridan cannot be a statistic. She is somebody’s entire world, and the mayor and the governor owe her real answers.”

Cooke pointed to the role of city and state leadership, referencing policies and conditions in Chicago.

“What’s the hardest part about this is Chicago’s been under Democrat leadership for nearly a century. You had Mayor Johnson run on defunding the police, same with Governor Pritzker. In fact, Governor Pritzker could be calling a public safety emergency as we continue to look for a suspect, so that our college students and citizens in Chicago are safe, but they continue to play with fire, which is politics and people’s lives, rather than doing what’s right.”

She also addressed parents directly, urging them to consider local leadership when evaluating college choices.

“This is the most liberal city, and I have to tell parents today, start looking not only at the colleges, but at the leadership, because that is telling on if your children will be safe.”

Cooke continued by referencing the broader impact of policies on safety, stating, “Most parents think progressive means freedom, opportunity, safety. It’s the exact opposite, and we’re going to continue to see lives lost because Democrats aren’t changing their tune. So parents need to get to the driver’s seat and start driving with their children and studying where they’re sending them and what cities and policies are in place.”

Corke then shared a statement from Gorman’s family, describing their response to the loss and their call for accountability.

“I think safety first. Let me share this. MAHEC, this is from the Gorman family. This is a statement on the shooting. Again, just such a I can’t imagine. The fact that they’re putting one out is really remarkable. It says here we trusted that she would be safe, that trust was broken. Someone made a deliberate choice that stole our daughter and forever changed our family, they go on to say we are demanding answers, and we will not stop until the person responsible is identified and brought to justice.”

Corke also addressed law enforcement efforts and concerns about policing approaches.

“I know that Chicago’s finest work incredibly hard. They will make this a priority, and yet, what you just said there earlier about reducing funding for police, or these policing strategies where you simply say, well, maybe we can get counselors out there to take on the bad guys. It’s that kind of mindset that really strikes at the core of what has happened here that’s so devastating for so many.”

Cooke returned to the issue of crime rates and policy decisions, stating, “You’re right, and Chicago’s murder rate is five times higher than New York, who’s run by another Democrat mayor. And you continue to look at these cities and ask yourself, why are we failing our citizens? Why are we failing our children?”

She continued, “It comes down to policies, the most important part of our fabric, our communities, our police officers, they’re what immediately respond to threats. When you reduce the force and you turn your lives over, your child’s lives over to counselors, this is a direct result.”

Cooke added, “So I say again, progressive does not mean golden opportunity. It means death and destruction, Wrong place, wrong time. Is not the motto that can be used for Sheridan or any of your young children that are being gunned to death, and it’s on the mayor and the governor to get this family answers. We’re all demanding it, because this is heartbreaking and it was preventable.”

Corke closed the discussion by reiterating the need for safety and accountability.

“Man, it was preventable. Cautionary tale for all of us. My head cook as always. Thank you for your time. We appreciate your perspective on this. I know how much you love Chicago. I love Chicago. It’s a great town, but we want the very best for the people there. Most notably, we want their youngsters safe.”
