Sheriff Faces Down Man That Threatened to Kill Him [WATCH]

A Florida sheriff personally confronted a man accused of threatening his life during a face-to-face exchange at Daytona Beach International Airport, shortly after the suspect was extradited to the state from Washington, as reported by The Blaze.

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood was waiting at the bottom of an airport escalator when 45-year-old Matthew Moulton, of College Place, Washington, was escorted by law enforcement officers last Wednesday.

Moulton is facing a second-degree felony charge for written or electronic threats to kill or do bodily harm, punishable by up to 15 years in prison under Florida law. As Moulton arrived, Chitwood had this to say:

“Matthew, I’m Sheriff Chitwood. I’m the guy you want to kill, and there’s nothing I can do about it. Challenge accepted.”

The exchange was captured on video and released by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

The confrontation stems from a threatening email Moulton allegedly sent to Chitwood on March 20. According to the arrest affidavit, the message stated:

“I’m going to have to threaten you with death. It’s coming. There’s nothing you can do to stop it.”

Law enforcement responded immediately. The Volusia Sheriff’s Office contacted authorities in Washington on the same day, and Moulton was questioned at his home shortly afterward.

He reportedly told investigators the email was “satirical and artistic” and that it fell within his First Amendment rights.

Moulton is believed to have been angry with Chitwood over his public campaign to expose students who make false school shooting threats by posting their mug shots and “perp walk” footage online.

The affidavit also cites a disturbing statement from Moulton, alleging that “the internet does with children you expose… make[s] child porn with them.”

Chitwood, in his airport exchange, emphasized the seriousness of the charge:

“But you do know in Florida, a written threat to kill is a felony? You know that, right?”

When Moulton claimed, “You violated my rights,” the sheriff responded:

“I will also tell you that you will not see Mickey Mouse on this trip, and you have to reimburse us for your flight here and for your stay at the county jail.”

During the interaction, Moulton told Chitwood he was a Christian. Chitwood replied, “So am I.”

Moulton then said, “In Corinthians, it says bondsmen are not Christian.”

Chitwood ended the encounter by escorting Moulton to a patrol car, saying, “We’ll make sure the cell has rubber in it.”

Moulton is currently being held at the Volusia County Branch Jail on a $100,000 bond. His court date is scheduled for June 19.
