Shocking Twist as Gene Hackman’s Autopsy Reveals New Heartbreaking Details About His Diagnosis and Final Days [WATCH]

It has been two months since legendary Hollywood actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found deceased in their Santa Fe, New Mexico mansion.

Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 65, had passed away well before they were discovered on February 26, their remains tragically mummified by the time officials arrived.

Now, the final autopsy results for Hackman have been released, shedding new and heartbreaking light on the Oscar-winning actor’s final days.

Hackman’s Final Autopsy Results

The official autopsy report, obtained by Page Six from the Office of the Medical Investigator in New Mexico, reveals that Hackman had not eaten for an extended period before his death.

Toxicology tests found trace amounts of acetone in his system — specifically, 5.3 mg/dl — a level that is consistent with prolonged fasting.

In addition, no food was found in Hackman’s stomach at the time of his passing.

This harrowing discovery was only part of the broader health issues the beloved actor faced.

The autopsy report also cited a “history of congestive heart failure” and “severe chronic hypertensive changes, kidneys,” indicating that his health had been steadily declining for some time.

Furthermore, the examination noted “neurodegenerative features consistent with Alzheimer’s disease,” confirming that Hackman had been battling a devastating cognitive illness in his final years.

The Tragic Circumstances of Hackman and Arakawa’s Deaths

Authorities believe that Hackman was alone in their home for several days following Arakawa’s death.

Betsy Arakawa, Hackman’s wife of over 30 years, is believed to have passed away around February 12, the date of her last phone call.

She died from hantavirus, a rare and often deadly virus transmitted through rodent droppings.

Upon investigation, officials found the mansion to be infested with rats, describing it as a “breeding ground” for hantavirus.

Hackman’s last signs of life were recorded on February 18, when his pacemaker registered its final activity. His official cause of death was determined to be heart failure.

Given the progression of his Alzheimer’s disease, officials, including Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Heather Jarrell, stated that it was “quite possible” Hackman was unaware that his wife had died just rooms away.

Arakawa had served as Hackman’s primary caregiver during his declining years.

The autopsy suggests that Hackman’s Alzheimer’s may have advanced to the point where he could no longer feed himself independently, making Arakawa’s sudden death even more catastrophic for him.

A Love Story Spanning Decades

Hackman and Arakawa married in 1991 after meeting at a fitness center where she worked. Though the couple did not have children together, Hackman was a father to three children from his previous marriage.

Over their three decades together, Hackman and Arakawa lived a relatively private life, especially after Hackman’s retirement from acting in 2004 following his final film, Welcome to Mooseport.

The pair shared a quiet existence away from the spotlight in Santa Fe, where Hackman, once an imposing figure in Hollywood, chose a life of reclusion with Arakawa by his side.

Their bond remained steadfast until their very last days, marked by profound devotion even in the face of devastating health challenges.

Hackman left behind an estate valued at approximately $80 million. His will, drafted in 1995, designated Arakawa as his sole beneficiary.

Interestingly, Arakawa’s own will included a provision stating that if both she and Hackman died within 90 days of each other, their combined fortune should be donated to charity. It remains unclear whether Hackman’s surviving children will pursue legal action regarding the estate.

Earlier this month, the couple was laid to rest side-by-side during a private ceremony attended by Hackman’s children.

Friends and fans alike have mourned their loss, remembering Hackman not just for his cinematic contributions, but for the private love story he shared with Arakawa.

A Somber Farewell to a Hollywood Legend

The revelations from Hackman’s final autopsy provide a sobering glimpse into the challenges he faced at the end of a truly remarkable life.

It is heartbreaking to imagine the loneliness and confusion that might have marked his final days.

Yet there is some comfort in knowing that Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa, who dedicated their lives to one another, are now reunited.

Their story, though tragic at its end, remains one of enduring love and loyalty — qualities that defined Hackman both on and off the screen.

Rest in peace, Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa.
