Support for the WNBA’s Caitlin Clark left a sideline reporter out of a job in what was considered a “severe lapse in judgment” on her part.
“The rumors are true. I was fired …”
While many had their attention divided between the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday parade through Washington, D.C. and the “No Kings” protests sweeping the nation on June 14, since-fired Big3 reporter Rachel DeMita was handling her own split coverage.
Though she contended her focus had remained on reporting the opening weekend of the Ice Cube co-founded league’s season, sharing a highlight from Clark’s return from injury found the correspondent faced with a more permanent sidelining.
“The ‘final straw’ that led to the parting was when DeMita tweeted about Caitlin Clark highlights this past Saturday during a game which she was working as a courtside correspondent for Big3,” reported Front Office Sports Friday.
Rather than leave the story unaddressed, DeMita took to her own social media and published a video where she said, “The rumors are true. I was fired from the Big3 and my team received an email at 11 p.m. on Tuesday with a letter that essentially said that I had been terminated.”

To prevent misrepresentation of events, the reporter opted to read directly from the email that she had been sent and quoted, “It has come to Big3’s attention that Ms. DeMita was posting on her social media platform during this past weekend’s Big3 games and promoting the competing New York Liberty vs. Indiana Fever WNBA game that was being broadcast at the same time.”
“The league is extremely dismayed and disappointed by Ms. DeMita’s severe lapse in judgement while performing services for the league during which time she should have reasonably known that she should have been promoting only league games,” continued the recitation. “The league provided her with unique access and opportunity to be a focal point on national broadcast, so management was completely taken aback to learn that she was posting about another league’s games while in the midst of rendering services.”
While she would go on to post more about the WNBA game on her own time, DeMita admitted to posting a highlight of a Clark three-pointer with the caption, “for those who questioned the hype..” in addition to sharing a post about Clark from Nike and the Fever’s post about the team’s victory.

“I did feel a little bummed that there wasn’t any discussion prior to me being fired,” admitted the reporter. “I didn’t hear from anybody, there was no talks about it, and I wasn’t under the impression that those tweets would do any severe harm to the Big3 or anybody would think any type of way about it.”
DeMita also explained that prior to her termination, she had yet to sign a new contract with the Big3 and that she was working the first weekend in “good faith” as her agent endeavored to finalize the details for her.
