Spanish town passes first of its kind ban on Muslim celebrations in public places

A Spanish town went against the grain and became the first in the country to ban public spaces from hosting unapproved Muslin religious ceremonies.

The town of Jumilla, with a roughly 7.5% Muslim population, passed the ban that was proposed by the conservative People’s Party and was backed by Spain’s right-wing Vox Party. The ban will no longer allow “religious, cultural or social activities alien to our identity”, unless officially approved by the local council, a statement from the People’s Party said.

The new rule comes a month after violence erupted during anti-migrant protests 70 miles outside of Jumilla, the Daily Mail reported. Several people were reportedly injured during the event.

Muslim leader condemned the ban that will prevent them from gathering in public places to celebrate “Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha, the Islamic festival of sacrifice,” the DM reported.

“They’re not going after other religions, they’re going after ours,’ Mounir Benjelloun Andaloussi Azhari, president of the Spanish Federation of Islamic Organizations, said, calling the ban, “Islamophobic and discriminatory”.

“We’re rather surprised by what’s happening in Spain,” he continued. “For the first time in 30 years I feel afraid.”

Local Socialist leaders aren’t happy either.

“The PP violates the constitution and puts social cohesion as risk simply in the pursuit of power,” Francisco Lucas charged on X.

Former Jumilla Mayor and fellow socialist Juana Guardiola also sounded off in disbelief.

“What do they mean by identity? And what about the centuries of Muslim legacy here?” she said.

The People’s Party and the Vox Party see it differently and reportedly celebrated the ban, stating that “Spain is and will forever be the land of Christian people.”

The decision was made in a town called Jumilla (town with a population of 25 k), so it only applies to that town.
