Over the weekend, Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn and Ireland’s Deputy PM Simon Harris agreed a framework deal to repeal the Legacy Act. Harris confirmed there were no new protections for veterans…
The draft legislation includes a so-called Remedial Order – repealing clauses 46 & 47 of the Legacy Act, which currently block Gerry Adams and 400 other IRA suspects from claiming taxpayer cash. The government still can’t explain how it plans to stop Adams suing. The Northern Ireland Office says that Remedial Order itself is the only available “lawful” fix. Shadow Defence Secretary James Cartlidge said:
“Let us be clear – The default is that Gerry Adams cannot sue the British taxpayer, because of existing clauses (46 & 47) in the Conservative Party’s Legacy Act. Labour’s Remedial Order, which accompanies today’s agreement, specifically removes those particular clauses, so that Adams can. Thus, Labour are shamefully betraying our Veterans, in favour of those they fought against, on our behalf.”
Starmer said in the Commons in January that the government would look at “every conceivable way” to prevent Gerry Adams from receiving compensation. No sign of that…
UPDATE: A UKG spokesman said:
“The Government is clear that there was a legitimate and lawful basis for Interim Custody Orders. As we have said, we will legislate to clearly reaffirm this for these cases.”
