ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith called out Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett on Monday for constantly resisting President Donald Trump.
Crockett admitted in March on “Lone Star Politics” that she was prioritizing resisting Trump over passing legislation. Smith, on “The Stephen A. Smith Show,” argued that this kind of mindset undermines her duty to govern.

“When I hear Jasmine Crockett talking about how ‘I’m just against all things and everything Trump,’ is that legislating? Isn’t it an obligation that you have to come up with something?” Smith asked. “If the other party is in office, you have to go from thinking that you’re going to get what you want if your party was in the White House and instead transitioning to ‘How can I work with the other party to get some of what I want? Because I know I’m not going to get most of what I want because they won the election.’”
Crockett said on “Lone Star Politics” that she was attempting to prevent “regress” rather than make “progress.”
“So right now, I can tell you that, unfortunately, I am not working towards very much that I would consider being the progress train,” she said. “I am working to make sure that I can minimize the regress train right now. And I think— and I hope — that my district appreciates that I am being honest with them.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also said on “Morning Joe” in March that the Democratic Party’s “job” was to weaken the president’s popularity.
Nearly two-thirds of Democrats wanted their congressional lawmakers to avoid making compromises with Trump, regardless of whether it impedes bipartisan advancements, according to a March 16 NBC News poll.
However, former Clinton pollster Mark Penn asserted Wednesday that Democrats’ “problem” is that Americans perceive them as hyper-partisan and extreme on certain policies.
“They’re seen as purely partisan, but off the deep end on some policy issues, not trying to be constructive, not listening to the will of the people to try to get things done together with the president,” he said.
Moreover, March polling by NBC News and CNN/SSRS found Democrats holding all-time low popularity ratings — 27% and 29%, respectively.
Trump has supported policies with wide public support, including preventing biological males from participating in female sports, deporting illegal immigrants and cutting government waste. However, Democrats have tended to adopt the less popular stance on these issues.
