A 28-year-old former college cheerleader and self-described honor student plowed into a Maryland police officer and nearly hit pedestrians at a street fair in Laurel Saturday, all because she couldn’t be late to work.
Kai DeBerry-Bostick, a graduate of Bowie State University and a member of the Zeta Delta sorority, according to the New York Post, is now facing assault charges after brazenly ripping down police tape and driving into a closed festival zone Saturday morning, bodycam video released by police shows. “I need to get out, I need to get out,” DeBerry-Bostick can be heard saying, before informing the officer on video, “I gotta go.”
The officer, who remained composed despite the tantrum, offered to call her a cab — an offer she dismissed. In the video, she defies orders and yells, “I got to go to work! What do you want me to do?”
The woman got into her car, pushed past the officer and onto a street filled with pedestrians. As her car rolled dangerously close — within feet — of a man pushing a stroller, the cop is seen screaming at her to stop.
Festival-goers scattered in panic. The officer sustained minor injuries while attempting to stop the vehicle, and DeBerry-Bostick was ultimately yanked out of the car and cuffed on the street, the video shows. She is now in custody and facing multiple charges, including assault resisting arrest and reckless endangerment, NBC Washington DC reported.
The Laurel Police Department confirmed that no civilians were injured, though a separate incident — a propane tank explosion at a booth — forced the cancellation of a planned parade later in the day.

DeBerry-Bostick’s background makes the story all the more surreal. She was an honor student, cheerleader, and seemingly honor student at Bowie State.
