Super Bowl-level security for Charlie Kirk memorial amid threats to attendees

Federal authorities are aware of and are tracking “several threats of unknown credibility” directed at people who will attend Charlie Kirk’s memorial service in Glendale, Arizona, this weekend as the slain activist and commentator is laid to rest after he was assassinated last week.

The people include President Donald J. Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and members of Kirk’s family, according to ABC News, which obtained a copy of the threat assessment memo that was sent to government and law enforcement agencies.

The beloved conservative icon’s life will be celebrated on Sunday at State Farm Stadium, home of the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, and is expected to be attended by thousands who will honor the life and legacy of the victim of the most significant political assassination in the U.S. since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“Violent extremists and unaffiliated lone offenders may view the memorial service or related events as attractive attack targets due to the attendance of these individuals, other senior US government officials, state and local government officials, and political activists and due to major international media attention,” the memo states, according to ABC News.

The memo was issued by federal agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), DHS, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Secret Service.

The event has been designated as a “Special Event Assessment Rating (SEAR) Level 1 event” by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the same level as the Super Bowl and other major events such as the Boston Marathon, prime targets for terrorists.

“This designation is reserved for events of the highest national significance and enables the federal government to provide the full range of law enforcement and security resources necessary to support local officials in ensuring a safe and successful event,” a DHS official told The Hill on Thursday.

The high level designation comes amid a period of intensifying left-wing political violence with Democrat rhetoric having contributed to domestic terrorism such as the recent firebombing of Tesla dealerships to protest former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) boss Elon Musk, attacks on Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) agents, and Kirk’s murder by a 22-year-old leftist sucked into the hateful vortex of the militant transgender movement.

“The U.S. Secret Service has been designated as the Federal Coordinator for this effort. Our teams are already on the ground in Phoenix and Glendale, working side-by-side with state, local and federal partners,” said special agent in charge of Secret Service’s Phoenix field office William Mack in a statement.

“Together, we are fully committed to ensuring that these solemn events receive the comprehensive protection and support they require,” Mack said.

“Charlie died doing what he loved: fighting for truth, for faith, for family, and for America. His sacrifice will endure as a guiding light for generations. Though our hearts are heavy, we do not grieve as those without hope. Charlie’s legacy endures in his family, in Turning Point USA and Turning Point Action, and in the millions he inspired to live with conviction. We honor him not only with our words, but with our actions. We will move forward together, fighting harder, standing taller, and refusing to surrender,” Turning Point USA states on the page for Sunday’s memorial event.
